Surgical Pathology

This is one of the top of the line facilities which provides diagnostic support for surgical oncology in quick time. For example a breast cancer can be reported in four hours on cytolocial examination. Frozen section facility helps intraoperative decision making. Immunohistochemistry and receptor studies are also done.

Not many outside the medical profession know what Surgical Pathology (Histopathology & Cytopathology) is or what a Surgical Pathologist does. Yet, few surgical decisions -especially on cancer and related disorders would be possible without Surgical Pathology. Histopathology and cytopathology diagnose problems / diseases. This is far removed from the quantitative world of clinical chemistry and haematology.

In this numberless world, it is the subtleties of the shades of grey that must be interpreted. Answering the surgeon’s question “What next?” fall under the purview of a Surgical Pathologists’ responsibilities. Here is where science meets the art of medicine and may even have to bow to it. The skill of the Surgical Pathologist is not easily acquired. It is honed and tempered by long years in the laboratory.

Surgical Pathologists’ are therefore the rara avis of the pathology world.

Our Department of Surgical Pathology

In our mission for excellence in pathology, recognized the need for good histopathology and cytopathology services was recognised. Towards this goal we established a modern histopathology laboratory fully equipped to provide high quality histopathology and cytopathology services which answers diagnostic and therapeutic questions in surgical pathology in a timely and precise manner.

Tests Available

The department offers routine histopathology and cytopathology, Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC), screening tests for cervical cancer, Immunohistochemistry for diagnostic and predictive markers. Frozen section services to answer any “on table queries” that the operating surgeon may have, is available.
